Goedkeuring trailer

Mark Prosser vraagt op 21 september 2010:

Hello again,

i have a small trailer (max 750kg) manufactured in Italy which is compliant for their italian ministry of transport. The manufacturer will release me all the papers (CVO with the EU-valid frame number and designs of the trailer with the EEC directives which are respected) which talk about the compliance of the vehicle, but these are not EU-approved documents. The vehicle can pass all RDW tests for the EEC directives, but will I be able to import it without the EU-approved documents?

Thank you very much

You don't need any papers or a special license plate for a max 750 kilo trailer in Holland.
A white license plate with the towing car number is sufficient.

I don't see any problem if you make sure that the trailer is safe for road acces for instance fitted with a cable to make sure that the trailer remains connected to your car if it brakes loose from the towing hook, is fitted with working lights and reflectors.

Thanks for your reply Eric.

I will register in italy a temporary plate (for export, valid 1 month) for the trailer and then have the RDW inspect it for registration. As you said it will not be necessary to make any approval (small series or individual) procedure?

If this is correct then there will be no issues because the vehicle is EEC compliant; it has lights and accessories, an EEC coupling and also automatic braking system; I have papers where the manufacturer states that it is compliant to the necessary EEC directives.

I only have a doubt about the fog lights and the height: the trailer has no fog lights, are they mandatory in NL? And also: the vehicle is 10 cm above the height as per EEC directive 97/27; will this be a major problem?

Thanks

Precisation: the vehicle is 3.8m (length) x 2.1 m (width) x 2.60 m (height), I think this is OK for a small trailer

@Eric antwoordt op 21 september 2010:

Are you sure the max. weight is 750 kilo or is that tarra weight?

I don't think you have to go to the RDW for inspection.
Foglight is mandantory for trailers < 750 kilo.
Maximum height in Holland = 4.00 metres (including cargo)

Mark Prosser antwoordt op 21 september 2010:

The manufacturer told me that the vehicle is about 500 kg and declared load will be around 250kg, so total maximum weight can be set below 751kg.

Thanks for your info about the foglight and height, I will tell them to put such foglights!

That is big for a trailer with maximum total weight of 750 kg. Are you sure that 750 kg is the empty weight plus maximum allowed load?

If not, it will need a registration of its own and you certainly need the RDW for that. The tax collector may also want his share.

In either case you wil need the fog light. A rear fog light is mandatory for all trailers < 750 kg and for trailers >750kg with a registration later than 31 dec 1997.

You can find useful information on importing vehicles fro the site of te RDW: http://www.rdw.nl/nl/voertuigeigenaar/international_visitor/import/

You will also find information on how to contact them on that site.

Ok, in that case you can skip all formalities. To avoid problems be sure there is a tag from the manufacturer stating the maximum weight. If you have a car with Dutch plates, just get a white plate with the number of the car, fix that to the trailer and go. If you drive outside The Netherlands with it, you must also have the white oval with the letters "NL" in black, because the white plate does not have the blue rectangle with country information.

You need one or two fog lights. If there is one fog light, it must be mounted in the middle or left of the middle. If there are two, they must be mounted symetrically. Not lower than 25 cm above the road and not higher than one metre. The distance between the fog light(s) and the brake light(s) must not be less than 10 cm.

The rear fog light must be controlled from the driver's position and there must be an indicator light. It may be controlled by the same switch that controls the car's rear fog light(s) and in that case the indicator light for the car's fog lights will do. It is allowed and recommended that the car's fog light(s) are disabled when the trailer is hooked on, but this is not compulsory.

Good luck and enjoy.

Thank you Michiel for your reply.

Yes the trailer is big but almost empty so it's not heavy and everything is below 750; I have a Dutch registered car with plate, how can I get the plate with the "NL" writing for my trailer? Because I want to go pick the trailer and then attach such plate and then move through Austria and Germany to get back to Netherlands.

I have checked the fog lights and they are OK; only possible issue is with the backward lights, do you know if they are required?

Thank you very much for your kindness

Mark,
any well-equipped auto shop or dealer can help you a white plate. On a trailer below 750kg you don't need any foglights or white backward lights, yet.
But for the fufture....who knows?

Michiel antwoordt op 21 september 2010:

@Mark,

You can get the white plate with the car's registration number for the trailer at most car shops, but only a few can make them on the spot while you wait. I have good experience with Breezan. Less than ten minutes wait. You can find the address of the nearest shop by Googling for "Breezan". No, I do not work for them and I am not a shareholder. Just a satisfied customer.

They may also have the oval nationality sticker, but I am not sure. If not, you can get it here: http://www.carstickers.nl/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=2&Itemid=1&vmcchk=1&Itemid=1

You need the white oval with the lettrs "NL" in black. All the others are unofficial and unapproved.

As for the white reverse light(s), it is not required for trailers <751 kg.

@RobD: Je moet toch echt een mistachterlicht hebben op een lichte aanhanger hoor.

Ok, guys my mistake. I have an old little trailer, about 12 years old without foglights. Don't use it that often, to get to the dumpyard. 3 times checked by the police for overweight (popular site to do so) but never been told about the foglights.
Should I tell them next time😉

Mark Prosser antwoordt op 22 september 2010:

Thank you guys, I thought I had to require a duplicate plate to RDW but as you told me I can duplicate it at any shop (like Breezan); the only important thing for me is that it is approved.
